RRAP and HASI
RRAP
(Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program)
RRAP offers financial assistance to low-income people with disabilities (Disabled RRAP), low-income homeowners (Homeowner RRAP), and landlords of affordable housing (Rental RRAP) in the form of a forgivable loan to carry out eligible repairs and upgrades to their homes and/or properties. The maximum loan for the Disabled and Homeowner RRAP is between $16,000 and $19,000, and between $24,000 and $28,000 per self-contained unit for the Rental RRAP program.
Eligibility for each program varies; however, all require applicants to be considered low-income as outlined in the Housing Income Limit (HIL) guidelines for Thompson – that is, total gross household income must be below the HIL. Furthermore, both the Homeowner and Rental RRAP programs require your home to be in need of a major repair in at least one of five key areas – structural, electrical, plumbing, heating, and fire safety. The Disabled RRAP requires modifications of houses or rental units that will meet the needs of occupants with disabilities. These modifications or changes must relate to housing and be reasonably connected to the occupant´s disability. Examples of modifications are; a ramp, chair lift, and bathtub lift.
HASI
(Home Adaptations for Seniors´ Independence Program)
HASI provides financial assistance to homeowners and landlords to carry out minor home adaptations that help low-income seniors (65 years of age or older) experiencing difficulties with daily living activities in the home. The maximum loan is $3,500, and like the RRAP programs, total gross household income must fall below the HIL´s for Thompson. Examples of adaptations are; handrails in hallways and stairs, easy to reach work and storage areas, grab bars and bathtub seats.
If you are interested in applying for one of these programs the following documents are required:
- Most recent Income Tax statement
- Property Tax statement
- Proof of homeownership
- Total household income
- A letter from a Doctor – Disabled RRAP
- Three (3) work estimates
