Cynthia Lathlin I’m a Cree Aboriginal woman, grandmother of two beautiful grandchildren and a mother of one beautiful daughter. My band membership is Opaskweyak Cree Nation. I was raised on a reserve in Split Lake, Mb as a foster child and later traditionally adopted. I moved to Thompson with my daughter to escape poverty, violence, lack of housing, lack of resources, lack of employment and education as well as discrimination.

I have been taught by my adopted mother the traditional way of Cree life. She taught me to be kind, be helpful to all people, to be respectful of all things. She taught me the seven sacred laws and the tipi teachings in secrecy by just doing, not fully understanding why……

I have been a resident in Thompson for 18 years and I consider Thompson my home. I have witnessed many unfortunate circumstances in relation to the Aboriginal population in Thompson and I vowed to help in any way possible as soon as I was strong enough to take the pressure of resistance and ignorance.

I lived in fear most of my life and I do not want to live that way today. Today I am strong and I want to help pave a healthy road for the future generation of our children, our grandchildren and great grandchildren. I want to help shape a healthy and safe community for all. I want to help my sisters and brothers reconnect with our culture, our heritage, our values and beliefs.

TNRC is great organizations that meet the needs of my interest, as well as networking opportunities, knowledgeable staff, passionate and committed as well provide advocacy for all residence of Thompson.
